Projektinitiativ #110: Local evaluation of residual stresses in cast components ( 1 kommentar)
To be able to measure very localised macroscopic or microscopic stress states the FIB-SEM might be utilised. With the FIB-SEM small shallow holes could be machined and with similar procedure as in conventional hole drilling the displacements from removing stressed material could help interpreting the residual stress state. This could be done to measure very shallow stress profiles on component surfaces or to measure the stress state in single grains. The interpretation of the displacements is complex and needs expertise from mechanical modelling.
The idea with the project is to deepen the understanding of the possibility to utilise the FIB-SEM technology to measure residual stresses. The possibility to measure the stresses more locally is a step towards a better understanding of the performance of the cast components. It provides a way to improve the overall picture of the important residual stress state in components. It adds further information to the conventional methods.

Residual stresses are defined as either macro or micro, where macro is on a much larger scale and covers several grains. Micro level stresses on the other hand considers variations between different grains, and also within single grains. FIB-SEM can be used to better understand residual stresses on the micro level. FIB-SEM to machine a hole and release the stresses is interesting. However, it is also important to select a method to measure the displacements. The initiativ is interesting and also important as it increases the understanding of residual stresses on a micro level and how these contributes to the overall behavior of a component. We could contribute with our knowledge and experience of residual stresses.
