Projektinitiativ #46: Open Source CFD Toolbox for Swedish Steel Society ( 3 kommentar)

The aim of the current initiative is to create a platform in order to use open source computational fluid dynamic (CFD) as an alternative to proprietary software for metallurgical processes e.g., ladle metallurgy and modelling of blast furnace hearth. This has become a priority for Swedish iron and steel industries due to extensive licensing cost of proprietary tools.

Reza Safavi Nick presents the initiative during the 2017 conference

In the past few years, a CFD toolbox OpenFOAM (Open Field Operation and Manipulation) has matured enough to be used as a replacement of commercial codes and presented itself as a viable option in different fields of engineering. Therefore, the main objective is to develop OpenFOAM solvers which are applicable to metallurgical processes and to address the ever growing demands of the industries to have low cost in-line process models.

I agree that this is important. Although licensing costs at the University is at a large discount it still limits what we are able to do. Unified Open Source solvers that are developed towards metallurgical systems could potentially dramatically reduce costs, decrease computational time and open up the possibility to simulate phenomena that is not possible to simulate today due to lack of resources.

It would be excellent if this concept could be linked to initiative #20 in some way. Although the focus here is on metallurgical processes, input into the roadmap for modelling would be useful.

It would be great to create a joint effort to make a more comprehensive open source models to address wider industrial applications. Here at MEFOS, we have already created a roadmap and we are open to discussed and develop a further roadmap for such a collaboration.

Dear Reza,

I would like to congratulate you on your presentation and on the initiative you and your colleagues at MEFOS are proposing. It is essential to find a cheaper alternative to commercial CFD, albeit with a steeper learning curve.

Regards, MP
