Powder metallurgy (PM) is one of the most cost effective methods for manufacturing of the structural components with complex shapes. Inherent disadvantage of the PM components is the presence of the residual porosity, negatively affecting properties of the components.

Hence, in order to meet the growing demands on structural parts performance, increased density is of vital importance. The innovativeness of the proposal is based on the idea of utilization of combination of the tailored alloy design, utilizing specially developed master alloys for surface densification, with the conventional die compaction or cold isostatic pressing (CIP) and further pre-sintering in reducing atmosphere. In this way near full-density components will be produced with significantly improved mechanical performance. Further improvement in component properties will be achieved by capsule-free hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Produced in this way PM components will possess full density, meaning that the performance of the final structural component will reach the level of the static and dynamic properties not possible with the classical press&sinter PM manufacturing route. Such technology can allow development of totally new manufacturing route of the high-performance PM components for high-loading applications with very competitive price, as for example large gears.

The combination of CIP and HIP is of major interest in for example the SCANPAC process where it is used as important steps leading to fully dense parts.

Capsule free HIP of PM Components is a major challenge and a big step froward to reach parts with properties as good or better than forged products.
